Mrs. Bear plans a surprise Valentine's Day celebration for Mr. Bear despite their usual hibernating habits at that time of year.

When Old Bear falls asleep for the winter, he has a dream that he is a cub again, enjoying each of the four seasons.

Mama Bear tries to get Baby Bear to hibernate, but he keeps finding reasons to put it off, including eating a snack, taking a drink of water, and saying goodbye to the other animals in the forest.

Bear's friends awaken him the day before Christmas and help him to stay awake as they bake fruitcakes, fill stockings, and sing carols. Then, while they sleep, he prepares his own surprise.
